Art Beat at Wedgewood-Houston Art Crawl
Well… we’re sorta back.
Thanks to SNAP (South Nashville Action People), who is sharing wall space — because art needs walls, and we have lots of art!
Drop by Art Beat this Saturday, March 7, from 4PM–8PM during the Wedgewood-Houston Art Crawl.
A quick preview of the show.
ARTIST STUDIO SALE
Like the person who takes home the last puppy in a litter - as adorable and special as the rest, as you drive home, you know they were waiting just for you. That’s how it can be with art.
ARTIST STUDIO SALE: Art Beat artists will have work on SALE, so come find that gem that has been waiting to move home with you. Truly it is a collection of beautiful work.
As we say… follow art home.
ART MOVES EXHIBIT
March 7 – May 17
It is called Art Moves, and what came to me was how art literally moves us through time. Books, songs, poems, paintings, dance — they move us to tears, onto the dance floor, or into new worlds.
The featured artists are Jason Brueck and Xima Lee Hulings.
A little about each —
I have known Jason since opening the store in the Gulch, and he and his wife, Kate (also an artist), are a dynamic duo of surreal talent. You can’t help but want front row seats to their imaginations.
Jason’s astronauts draw you into a continuum of ever-evolving spaces. And just when you can’t get enough, he surprises you with the unexpected — new subjects, settings, shapes, and backdrops, full of twists and turns along the way — before bringing you back home again to his mothership, where, free from gravity, you find yourself floating in another galaxy.
“There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us,
But he thinks he'd blow our minds.”
— David Bowie
Homecoming by Jason Brueck
Xima is newer to Art Beat. I started showing her work when we moved to Wedgewood-Houston. I had the fun experience of visiting Xima in her studio, and between her art, her stories, and her knowledge, I could have made myself at home all day on her horse-fabric-covered family heirloom sofa.
She was formerly an architect, and around every corner in her studio is a new surprise — art that ranges from ceramics to painting to building small homes for her Disfarmer portraits. It’s not that she “dabbles” in these various mediums; rather, she falls into a rabbit hole with each one, and like Alice following the White Rabbit, you suddenly realize upon leaving her studio, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” She has a magical way of taking you with her.
Disfarmer Home by Xima Lee HulingsWe also have a couple more surprises in store. We hope to see you this Saturday at the Wedgewood-Houston Art Crawl!
